Written by Joe Hill, son of famous horror author Stephen King, Heart Shaped Box is the dark tale of a cursed suit and it’s haunted owner. I picked this book to design because it’s fun to design ominous things.
After re-reading Heart Shaped Box, I created a moodboard of descriptors, textures and images I felt captured the mood of the novel.
Next, I developed various type treatments for the cover and chapter heads. I started with rougher “grunge” typefaces, before moving onto a more refined and spectral typeface.
For the book interior, I designed Bodoni section heads, ornate Fette Fraktur chapter numbers, and transitional Baskerville for the body copy. The elegant thicks and thins of Bodoni paired nicely with the more classical (and readable) Baskerville.
Designing the cover was just the beginning. I imported the original text into InDesign, proof-reading the copy, styling the body copy, chapter heads, headers, footers and layout.
Prepared in InDesign, this is the final print PDF.
